HAYABUSA: ‘Evil Is Not That Laid Back.’

HAYABUSA are a kick-ass triumvirate from Manchester who, if this new single is anything to go by, specialise in blasting irregular shards of guitar, synth and drum noise in just about every direction imaginable.

‘Evil Is Not That Laid Back’ is full of stop / start rhythms and unusual time signatures. It’s not the kind of song that you’ll be humming as you make your way into work of a morning, that’s for sure. There’s no messing about as the song immediately throws the listener violently into its midst – no fannying about with intros and the like here! But within a minute there is the first little ‘breakdown’ where the guitar takes on an intermittent chugging riff that is supplemented by a light, synth swirl and the vocals pare back completely, before it all explodes once again into a raging torrent of noise.

In some ways, you could cite early Biffy Clyro as a valid reference point. Not that HAYABUSA actually sound like them, more that the ‘style’ of music and its delivery could be compared.

To be honest, my personal tastes are a bit more basic and straightforward. I like the aggression and attitude on his record, but prefer to have something less complicated and intricate – something that I can hum on my way into work of a morning!
