THIS is what makes LOUD HORIZON’S day!
Quality, hardcore punk from Brooklyn; LOUD and abrasive, but also quirky and slightly mental quality hardcore punk from Brooklyn! This aural assault will certainly not appeal to everyone, but I’m guessing that GAY FOR JOHHNY DEPP won’t be giving a flying four-x what anyone really thinks. This is the way these guys hang, take it or leave it
Cum On Feel The Boize by Gay For Johnny Depp
To me, the whole album (eleven tracks in twenty-one and a half frantic and furious minutes) comes across as a hybrid Dead Kennedys and Leftover Crack – it has the slightly off-kilter attitude of the former, blending with the hard-hitting and at times violent sound of the latter. And boy, does it work!
Yes, the vocals are all screamy and shouty, but there’s none of that infernal ‘metal-core’ guttural, phlegm-clearing-from-the-depths-of-hell, grunting. And there is a certain conformity to normality in that the songs have a defined structure with verses and choruses – choruses that just beg to be accompanied by the listener.
There’s a good deal of profanity mixed in with the huge, aggressive guitar riffs that adds to the ‘controversial’ tag that seems to follow these guys around. And though we all know it’s not big and it’s not clever…… it does also add to the whole image and indeed the whole ‘being’ of GAY FOR JOHNNY DEPP.
They seem very much like a band that take their music very seriously, but don’t really take themselves quite so. Song titles such as ‘No, I’m Married To Jesus. Now Keep Your Fucking Hands Off Him;’ and ‘Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny And Artistic Integrity,’ are the clues to that assumption.
Brutal as it may be, this not music that hurts. There is melody in there somewhere and GAY FOR JOHNNY DEPP have an almost stripped back sound for a hardcore punk band. You can hear the individual instruments and is most definitely not just a great amalgam of mashed up noise.
This is quality!
