COUNT TO FIRE: ‘I’m The Man You Need.’

If it’s sort of easy-going Americana type recordings you’re after, then this debut single from COUNT TO FIRE is probably right up your street.

‘I’m The Man You Need,’ is an acoustic-based song with a gentle stomp and featuring some understated pedal steel guitar and violin / fiddle. (So it sounds like, anyway.) This gives it a touch of a Country feel, but without going flat out down that dusty road. And (I’m conscious of sounding like my Dad here) it is nice to hear a song sung ‘properly’ these days, with the chorus being instantly memorable.

B-side, ‘City Lights’ doesn’t strike such a welcoming chord however. Despite it being Blues based and soulful, it borders on the mournful and reminds me a little of REM’s ‘Everybody Hurts,’ in places …. and that’s never a good thing, I’m afraid!

But going on the lead track, I can understand why some of the big hitting magazines like Uncut have been quick to lavish praise.

(Limited edition 7” vinyl release through Sugar Mountain on 12th September)

(7.5 / 10)
