Today is a good day. No – it’s a great day!
You see, today I stumbled upon the music of Boston psych / space-rock band THE OCULAR AUDIO EXPERIMENT.
Well – not so much ‘stumbled’ I guess, as ‘prodded in the direction of’ by Alex Pollock from the band itself. He dropped me an e-mail to mention that THE OCULAR AUDIO EXPERIMENT are releasing a new album in the coming weeks and he attached a sort of ‘trailer’ video to whet the appetite.
What immediately intrigued me was the concept of this album, ‘The Witch’s Whispering Tomes.’ Years in the making, it’s a double album featuring the same 12 songs in two different styles. The first, a heavy, darkly droning mixture of psychedelic rock influences clocksin at an hour and a half; the second, is something like a doomed, satanic, Looney Tunes wagon ride into hell.
The album is being released in two parts: The first, June 27th, and the second, July 11th.
Here’s the video snippet.
(Would I be wrong in saying this reminds me a little of Iceland’s Dead Skeletons?)
OK, so it’s kinda hard to tell after just a couple of minutes what you’ll be thinking after an hour and a half of listening to the full works, so I checked out the band’s Bandcamp page …… and this is where the day gets even better!
Not only can you listen to some of the band’s previous works – you can download FOUR albums worth FOR FREE!
(Guess what I’m gonna be doing this afternoon?!)
The following video includes music from the band’s ‘Friendly Psychic Strangers Church‘ album that was released in late 2010, so you can decide here and now whether to visit the Bandcamp page and treat yourself to some quality free music.
(You can probably tell that this is really right up ‘LOUD HORIZON street’, but I’d be interested to know what LH readers think. Please feel free to leave any comments below.)
