How good at music are Glasgow’s WE ARE THE PHYSICS?
Pure, dead good! That’s how good! Don’t listen to their pish about being ‘OK.’ They’re brilliant, right?!
However, when they say they’re proper rubbish at tennis, then I’d be inclined to agree. Which makes the title of their new single all the more surprising. ‘Goran Ivanisevic,’ is the first track to be lifted from the band’s forthcoming second album which is due for release later this year.
Yeah – that Goran Ivanisevic. The tall Croatian tennis player who won Wimbledon back in 2001, despite only qualifying for the tournament as a ‘wild card’ entry.
Vocalist Michael M explains: “We know zero about tennis, but Goran has always been one of our heroes just because of the sheer determination he had, having lost the title several times and the fact he claimed at every match he was playing against five different opponents, one of which was himself. And also the ball boys. After losing a title he said he was going to kill himself, then after beating Tim Henman he claimed he was genius. Just that furious drive and refusal to quit in the face of worldwide sneering, we’ve always thought was equally admirable and terrifying”.
There’s no point in even attempting to comment on what / how or why WE ARE THE PHYSICS are inspired in such fashion. They just are.
And I for one am so happy to have them back. We’ve missed you guys!
