THE VOLUNTARY BUTLER SCHEME: ‘Brain Freeze.’

I know next to nothing about THE VOLUNTARY BUTLER SCHEME (there’s bugger all about him on Facebook) but I assume it is the solo project of Rob Jones from the Black Country. Having produced a largely electronic album, ‘The Grandad Galaxy‘ in 2011, and since then has been learning some ‘proper’ instruments (you can tell I’m old!) like trumpet and saxophone, mainly from online / You Tube tutorials and i-Phone apps.

This in turn inspired Rob to put his recently acquired skills into practice, both in terms of maximising the brass sounds on the new single, ‘Brain Freeze,’ and also releasing the single solely as an App. No vinyl; no CD, not even a, i-Tunes download …. just an App.

A pretty cool VOLUNTARY BUTLER SCHEME App which will contain all the VBS videos to date; photo gallery; news; tour dates; VBS quiz; discography; links to the back catalogue, and most importantly of course, the single itself along with the ‘b-side.’ It will only be available on ‘i-Tunes & the App Store’ for i-Pod Touch as well as i-Phone / Pad. For more information, just click this link.

With regard to the track ‘Brain Freeze,’ it reminds me a bit of the superb Lightyear, who came from Derby and played some ‘re-formed’ gigs earlier in the year. It’s bright and chirpy, skirts around a ska sound and the brass, especially the trumpet is very Lightyear. Which is good … very good!

(‘Brain Freeze’ is lifted from the forthcoming album ‘A Million Ways To Make Gold,’ which will was recorded in Rob’s home studio and will be released early in 2013.)
