Normally, I would consider bands that have already featured in some of the big-hitting music magazines such as Q, Mojo, Classic Rock etc., would not really be material for this blog. However, Canterbury band SYD ARTHUR are still definitely ‘on the horizon,’ at the moment, but that is surely set to change very, very soon.
The band that features Kate Bush’s nephew Raven (expect this not to be the only time you read that little snippet!) are currently holed up in the studio preparing their debut album. Live dates are also being mapped out.
Perhaps a little surprisingly for a band in their early twenties, SYD ARTHUR play a lovely blend of folk (yeah – I know!) / psychedelic and good old fashioned progressive rock. And of course, being from Canterbury they have drawn great influence from the famous ‘Canterbury Sound’ that bands like Soft Machine, Caravan and Gong brought to prominence. More contemporary bands that they feel a kinship with are Black Mountain and Tame Impala.
Maybe I’m mellowing in my old age; maybe it’s because I’m writing this before breakfast on a cold and foggy morning, or maybe it’s simply just my current penchant for psych / psychedelic music – whatever … I think this is a particularly good track, perfect for easing you in (or out) of the day.
SYD ARTHUR – remember where you heard them second!
