SINKANE: ‘Runnin”

SINKANE - 200 - December 2012No – you probably wouldn’t expect to see this on LOUD HORIZON, but this track in particular is so infectious and just so goddamned funky that it HAD to be posted!

From what I can make out, SINKANE is the project / band of one Ahmed Gallab, a Sudan-born, multi-instrumentalist now living in New York. Having left his homeland as a boy, his family emigrated to USA, where he moved around quite considerably before settling in his present location. He has already established a reputation in music circles as the touring multi-instrumentalist for Of Montreal,CaribouBorn Ruffians and Eleanor Friedberger.

Although enlisting the talents of a band for touring and assistance in the recording process, SINKANE seems to be pretty much still the ‘baby’ of Ahmed with him playing at least four instruments on every track of the debut album ‘Mars,’ which is released today – 17th December.

I’ve not heard the album myself, but here’s what the Press Release says:

‘‘MARS’, the brand new debut album, is dense with deep, polyrhythmic grooves that refer as much to early 70’s underground soul as back to Sudan, Gallab’s home country. On another level, it’s a 21st century party record that acknowledges the international musical village in which we all now live.’

It’s always good to feature some music that perhaps you wouldn’t have listened to unless it was plonked right down in front of you. This is one such case. I’m glad I checked it out!
