Those Naughty Boys were formed in 1965, Ottawa, Canada by Bobby Gauthier, who himself had been a bit of a ‘naughty boy,’ being expelled from High School for sporting long hair, apparently.
He promptly recruited some school friends and not long after, with no great musical experience to call upon, the group recorded an acetate single, ‘(My Girl’s) Gone Away.‘ Though recorded in 1966, it did not surface within the public domain until the mid-Nineties.
Having taken on The Esquires‘ roadie, Don Nicholson, to manage them, they soon landed a recording deal with Montreal’s, Fantastic Records who released their first single, ‘Heart.’ This was a cover of a Petula Clark ‘B-side’ and failed to make any impression in the charts.
They gigged relentlessly and not long after this release, the band undertook an arduous tour of North East Ontario and Quebec, during which they were lucky to survive unscathed as their tour vehicle was involved in a road accident.
They made decent money from the tour though, and ploughed it back into the band, investing the tour proceeds in creating their own night club, Club 400, in Cornwall, Ontario. This naturally afforded Those Naughty Boys their own residency as well as the opportunity to stage shows by touring bands.
By the time of their next release, the band were on the verge of splitting up. ‘Somebody Told My Girl,’ another cover, was released on the Sir John A label, but with three months worth of booked gig, and Bobby Gauthier unable to sing due to strained vocal chords, the talents of Eyes of Dawn frontman Wayne McQuaid were hired.
The band’s touring obligations were met, but tensions were running high from being constantly in each others’ pockets, and the band folded shortly thereafter.
Yet another excellent sounding garage band who sadly didn’t manage to fulfill their undoubted potential.

Has a British Invasion sound a bit…I like it. I hope you are doing better now.

I think pretty much all ‘garage’ bands from that era took a lot from the British Invasion, didn’t they? Not a bad model to emulate, mind. 😉
(Yeah – getting there, thanks. Been spending time on writing my wee account of what happened – just published it yesterday. NOT your usual ‘survivor tale’ I”d suggest, as you’ll probably guess from the title: ‘NO LAUGHING MATTER … a short tale of death, and how to recover from it.’) 😀

Not a bad model at all…that invasion started modern rock.
I’ll read it…. I took a vacation last week and didn’t really get back on here full time until yesterday. Glad you are doing better…I had one experience that was close.
