Egor.

Egor were a band of varying ages (sixteen to thirty-two) from East London.

They gigged pretty relentlessly all around the South East of England in the early 1970s, sometimes supporting more established bands, and had a residency at the Plough and Harrow pub in Leytonstone.

A local promoter approached them one evening and suggested he record Egor for inclusion on an LP he was putting together to showcase local bands. This he did the following week, returning again some weeks later with four copies of an LP called ‘Oddsocks‘ – one for each band member!

And that was it – the band never saw hide nor hair of the promoter again!

I don’t have much more (any more!) information on Egor myself, but there’s an in-depth interview with drummer Nick Diss over at the excellent ‘It’s Psychedelic Baby Magazine.(Credit where it’s due. Just make sure you return to Loud Horizon when you’ve read the article! 😉 )

Anyway – I discovered this track on the Cherry Red label’s bespoke psych/garage-era imprint, Grapefruit. It’s about as heavy and excellent as you’re likely to hear, with pounding bass lines and intricate guitar work.

Quite how this band didn’t become huge is beyond me!

John Flite – Harmonica / Vocals
Eric Taylor – Guitar
Mike Foster – Bass
Nick Diss – Drums
